Story of the Work
Van Gogh moved to Arles, France towards the end of 1888, where he dreamed of setting up his own studio. At that time, he began working with his close friend and painter Paul Gauguin. However, as tensions grew between them, one day they had a violent fight. After this fight, Van Gogh suffered a major emotional breakdown and cut off part of his own ear. Although the exact reasons for the incident are debatable, Van Gogh's psychological problems and mental disorders at the time played a major role in this situation.
After cutting his ear, Van Gogh was taken to the hospital and treated. The work he made after this incident, "Bandaged Ear and Pipe", emerged as a painting reflecting both his physical wounds and his spiritual pain. In the painting, Van Gogh poses calmly with his bandaged ear and pipe. Although his facial expression appears calm, the painting actually reveals the depth of the artist's inner pain.
This self-portrait is considered a powerful work that symbolizes both Van Gogh's personal and artistic struggle. Today, it is an important work by art historians to understand Van Gogh's spiritual world and his relationship with his art.
